Yichieng, born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia is a comedian and actor. Chieng is
currently a senior correspondent for The Daily Show on Comedy Central and
creator and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student which
premiered on ABC (Australia) and Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born
in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese family. From 1989 to 1994, he
was living in Manchester in New Hampshire. Chieng performed with Trevor Noah at
a Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. The following year Chieng was selected to
audition for the correspondent role on The Daily Show, which Noah hosts. He was
named among the top 10 comics to watch by Variety in July of 2016. In October
2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The Daily Show to react to a Jesse Watts
Fox News segment that many thought was racist. Chieng made expletive-laden
comments regarding the segment on conservative network Fox News. Chieng also
revisited New York City's Chinatown and Chinatown, where Watters had mocked
residents and conducted interviews more respectfully with residents in Mandarin
and Cantonese. The viral video was covered by the Washington Post, Slate, as
well as various other publications. Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout when he
was a young teen. Although he has been living in Australia for over 10 years,
he doesn't have permanent residency or citizenship in Australia. Chieng made an
absurd joke about being negative towards dogs during the 2018 Daily Show. But
Chieng later claimed that he is "100 100 percent confident about
dogs" in an interview.
