She was trained by the Rathmines Theatre Company from the age of 10 and attended the Abbey Theatre as young as the age of 14. A screen test was administered to her, however it wasn't a great success. Charles Laughton, however recognized her potential and offered her the opportunity to star with him in Alfred Hitchcock’s Jamaica Inn (1939). RKO Pictures gave her a contract. After that, she enjoyed an extended and prosperous career. She was often referred to as "the Queen of Technicolor". There was a widespread assumption that Wayne and O'Hara had marriage or in a relationship due to their close relationship. O'Hara began to assume more motherly roles in the 1960s as she got older. She appeared in films like The Deadly Companions (1961), The Parent Trap (611) and The Rare Breed (1966). In 1971, O'Hara announced her retirement from the film industry.
